We may not ever know what exactly happened to Michelle Trachtenberg.
According to Page Six on Thursday, the Gossip Girl alum’s cause of death was declared “undetermined.” Whoa! Why? Her family objected to an autopsy. A rep for the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in New York explained to the outlet:
“Under public health law, families may object to autopsy based on religious belief, and provided there is no suspicion of criminality or compelling public health reason to proceed with autopsy, the medical examiner honors the objection.”
The medical examiner conducted an external examination on Michelle but beyond that? There most likely won’t be any more testing done on her moving forward, so both the cause and manner of her death will be listed as “undetermined” on her death certificate… and never investigated past that. Wow…

We may not know the official cause of Michelle’s sudden death, but we do have an idea of what she was going through before her mother found her dead by her mother at a New York City apartment this week. As we previously reported, police sources told ABC News the Ice Princess star had a liver transplant and may have been suffering from complications.
Insiders later told People the 39-year-old actress “told friends she was struggling” with “health issues” and “really, really sick.” In fact, she was so “unwell” that an anonymous staffer at Sartiano, where she had dined during one of her final nights out, said that “she couldn’t walk down the stairs.” Awful. To paint a picture of how dire her situation was, a friend shared that Michelle ultimately “knew that death was a high possibility.”
