Miley Cyrus has one big fear amid the Bruno Mars copyright infringement lawsuit, says a source close to the pop star — and it’s a bit out of left field. It’s her ex-husband.
On Monday night, the Hannah Montana alum was sued by a company called Tempo Music Investments, which owns a portion of Bruno’s 2012 song When I Was Your Man. They claimed the 31-year-old illegally copied musical qualities of that song, which charted at the time of its release over a decade ago. They say she used it in her song Flowers. The company claimed:
“It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that Flowers would not exist without When I Was Your Man.”
But it sounds like Miley isn’t actually too worried about the lawsuit itself… Rather what she may have to admit if things move forward.
On Tuesday, an insider told DailyMail.com the Party In The USA singer is worried she’ll have to “publicly reveal” who the inspiration was behind the song… Liam Hemsworth. The source dished:
“Miley is not too concerned with the lawsuit itself, but everyone who knows Miley knows that this track was written as a way of healing from Liam.”
Uh oh!
Last year, Miley wasn’t exactly being subtle when she released the anthem on the eve of her ex-husband’s birthday. She reportedly intended it to be a response to the lyrics in When I Was Your Man — a song Liam apparently dedicated to her at some point. The source revealed:
“She wrote lyrics that were a reaction to Bruno’s lyrics in Your Man, specifically because that was Liam’s song to her. She only cared that he knew it was for him. Miley originally wrote it as a slow love ballad not the fast upbeat song that it became … She is worried that she will have to reveal her inspiration for writing the song.”
In When I Was Your Man, Bruno belts:
“I should have bought you flowers and held your hand / Should have gave you all my hours when I had the chance / Take you to every party ’cause all you wanted to do was dance
In Flowers, Miley responds:
“I I can take myself dancing / And I can hold my own hand / Yeah, I can love me better than you can”
Yeah, when you spell it out like that you can really see how the songs speak to each other! But according to the insider, Miley didn’t think about the similarities because she was just “so focused on making these digs at Liam over his alleged affair and that overshadowed anything else.” She doesn’t even mind admitting the song is meant to be a rebuttal to Bruno’s track. However…
“While she has no issue stating it was a response to Bruno, revealing it was specifically about Liam publicly and on record is very unsettling.”
Yikes! The exes split up in 2020, so having to publicly declare that one of her most FAMOUS songs ever — the one which finally won her a Grammy — is all about him would be annoying. Pop stars love keeping those things vague, it helps the song live past the half-life of tabloid virality. Heck, Taylor Swift has never admitted any of her songs are about the guys they’re about. We imagine Miley is feeling the same. But until things continue to play out, she’s just waiting to see what happens next:
“At this point she is just seeing how this plays out and is hoping it gets tossed out before any of that becomes a real possibility.”
How stressful!
Well, we’ll just have to see how things play out. What are your thoughts?? Be sure to let us know down in the comments!
