For the last year, Conservation International has been in Papua New Guinea for two scientific expeditions. The Muller Mountain Range is one of the highest biodiversity areas in the world.
Naturually, scientists went there to explore, document, and discover new species.
This is where this beautiful guy comes in. Although this species has been seen in previous expeditions to the mountain range, it has never been officially documented, or even photographed!
Thus far, all they know about it is that its a fruit bat and it plays a large role in the ecosystem. Much like other fruit bats, it disperses seeds from the fruit in its diet.
Have you ever seen anything quite like this guy? We haven’t! Look at that nose! It looks like he has two trumpets sticking off his face.
As weird as he looks, he is kind of cute, look at those huge eyes, and it looks like he’s smiling!
Along with this bat, another 120 species were found! It’s nice knowing certain parts of the planet are still thriving and untouched by man. We have to make sure we save these places!
