Prince William‘s former aide is opening up about how the Prince of Wales handled his family’s difficult health crisis behind closed doors last year.
As Perezcious readers know, William’s father and wife were both diagnosed with cancer within weeks of each other last year. Princess Catherine has since completed her treatment while King Charles III continues on with his. In a sit-down with 60 Minutes Australia on Sunday, Jason Knauf reflected:
“Within a couple weeks, if you’re Prince William, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer. And that is — I mean, I couldn’t believe it.”
Truly brutal…

Jason, who worked as a communications secretary for the couple, recalled a dour phone call with William:
“It was awful. Absolutely awful. It’s the lowest I’ve ever seen him.”
Oof. We can’t imagine. One diagnosis is difficult enough. Dealing with two at once is just gut-wrenching. And then there was the added pressure from the public, Jason pointed out:
“But the problem was that all this crazy, sort-of conspiracy theory stuff kicked off in the background online — ‘Was she really ill?’ But they didn’t want to say yet that she had cancer because they hadn’t told the children and were still working through how to tell the children.”
Unfortunately choosing the old way of saying nothing was the worst possible decision they could have made. The longer Kate was mysteriously out of the public eye, the more worried everyone became. The conspiracy theories even went mainstream as photo editing blunders and clumsy statements just made everything all the more sus. It was a media firestorm!
In an already deeply emotional and stressful time, the online chatter must have been such a pain! We get why they were holding off, though. Their children are still so young, they had to be delicate with that conversation! And they obviously just weren’t ready to share the tough news with the world.
Interesting to hear how hard Will was hit in private. TBH being more open about this stuff would maybe do him some good. You know who has a stiff upper lip?A cold fish. Just our very American opinion.
