Princess Catherine wasn’t wearing her prized engagement ring in that new cancer recovery video — but she had on a new meaningful piece of bling in its place!
As royal stans know, Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton in 2010 with a sapphire and diamond engagement ring that previously belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana. But in this week’s momentous announcement that she is “cancer free,” the Princess of Wales WASN’T rocking the special jewel. Instead, she showed off a new eternity band — one experts think honors her family!

Speaking to People on Wednesday, Lauren Kiehna, the founder of The Court Jeweller blog, said the ring in the cancer-free video seemed to be the same one Kate first wore in a video congratulating Great Britain on the 2024 Paris Olympics last month. At the time, fans thought it might’ve been the “promise ring” her husband previously gifted her, but a closer look now shows it’s a totally new piece of jewelry. Lauren said:
“The ring that Kate wore is definitely a newer addition to her jewelry box. It’s a slim, sparkling eternity-style band with alternating light and dark gemstones.”
The jewelry expert noted that Kate wore the ring the same way as she did in the Olympics clip, seemingly stacking it with her Welsh gold wedding band and the white gold and diamond Annoushka ring she got after the birth of her first child. As for its special meaning, she added:
“Many of these eternity bands reflect family relationships. Given that her children’s birthstones are rubies, emeralds and diamonds, it wouldn’t surprise me if the gems set in the new ring are linked to George, Charlotte and Louis.”
Sweet! See both rings (below):
Here it is in the Olympics video, as well:
So why has she stopped wearing Diana’s ring? Does this mean something bad about the state of her marriage? Nope! The expert insisted “royal women wear their engagement rings in different ways, just like the rest of us.” She explained:
“Some, like Queen Elizabeth, wear their engagement rings daily for their entire lives. Others, like Queen Mathilde and Queen Mary, switch out their engagement rings for other rings on a regular basis. And some, like Queen Letizia, haven’t been spotted wearing their engagement rings for years.”
She continued:
“The two videos showing Kate wearing the new eternity band were both filmed in casual, private moments. It wouldn’t surprise me if she sometimes chooses not to wear her most important jewels in those kinds of settings, reserving her grander engagement ring for more public occasions.”
The OG engagement ring is rather large and likely VERY expensive. It would be a little odd to be frolicking around in the woods and on the beach with that rock! This new one seems to be much more manageable, and clearly still has a sentimental meaning.
