Saved by the Bell may be getting revived for NBC’s forthcoming streaming service, but one key Bayside alum will likely be absent — for now!
Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played the mischievous jawline that was Zack Morris in the beloved series, said he was never approached to partake in the show’s upcoming TV sequel.
Say what now!?

The 45-year-old told Variety on the Mixed-ish premiere red carpet Monday night:
“I read it in the trades just like everybody else this morning. Honestly, I was never approached. I woke up to the news this morning with a kind of ‘huh’ response.”
“Huh,” indeed!
We mean, we’re all for another reboot in this golden age of television, but rebooting a show without even asking the OG lead to star in it? So not cool, NBC.

Even though MPG has “always been interested” in reprising the beloved character, he said he understands why NBC never reached out: he’s currently starring on Mixed-ish on ABC, which is directly competing against NBCU’s colorfully named streaming service, Peacock.

He admitted:
“I’m on ABC, so it doesn’t really fit into that considering Disney Plus, so I understand the business side of things. But I had no idea it was that far along.”
While Gosselaar’s character won’t be physically present when the series premieres — at least not for the time being — he’ll still be there in spirit.
The series is said to pick up decades after the original show went off the air, with Zack now serving as California governor, who faces backlash for shuttering too many low-income high schools. This causes students to be sent to the highest-performing schools in the state, including the governor’s alma mater, Bayside High.

The series is being produced by Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley, who are both set to reprise their roles as AC Slater and Jessie Spano, respectively.

Based on what we’ve heard, the series will definitely keep the door open for a cameo from Zack Morris, who sounds like he’s now some sort of omnipresent villain.
We mean, wasn’t he always kind of a narcissistic anti-hero anyway?
