Technical School Requires Mandatory Freshman Drug Test

Linn State Technical College

It may be the most intense drug-testing policy at any public college or university in the US too!

All first-year students at Linn State Technical College were required to undergo mandatory drug test on Wednesday.

School officials insists the screenings are meant to ensure safety of all students because of dangerous coursework that requires careful attention, including aircraft maintenance, heavy engine repair, and operating nuclear technology.

The associate dean of student affairs maintains they are trying to prepare students for similar procedures they will encounter when looking for a job, saying:

“They’re going to be faced with this as they go into the drug-free workplace. We want them to be prepared.”

Opponents are calling the mandatory drug tests a constitutional violation of the Fourth Amendment’s protection against unlawful searches and seizures, as well as an invasion of privacy.

Columbia attorney Dan Viets, a member of the Missouri Civil Liberties Association, is willing to go to court over it and explained:

“I’ve never heard of any other adult public educational institution that presumes to drug-test all of its students. They’re trying to break some new ground here. I don’t think the courts will uphold it. I don’t know why they think they can get away with it. I hope we don’t have to go court. But if we have to we will.”

Students who initially test positive for any of the 11 drugs like marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and oxycodone can remain in school, but on probation.

They must test clean 45 days later to remain enrolled while also completing an online drug-prevention course.

Do U think this new policy violates the students Fourth Amendment rights?
