Calm down Harry Potter fans! You can’t wear it.
Scientists have taken cloaking to the next level by redirecting light, using heat monitoring and even going underwater.
The latest success is from Stanford and the University of Pennsylvania who made a device that can detect light without actually being seen.
They got the ratio of metal to silicon just right, like in a silicon nanowire (above), and that led to the light reflected from the two materials completely canceling each other out.
They call it plasmonic cloaking. It’s a way of controlling the flow of light to create optical and electronic functions but leave nothing for the eye to see.
The scientists envisioned this technology being used to reduce blur in cameras, used in solar cells, sensors and solid-state lighting.
There’s no mention of super soldiers or boy wizard applications, which we find odd. LOLz!
