Miranda McWhorter's Ex-Husband Chase Shares His Side Of Soft Swinging Story

We’re finally hearing from someone else involved in the soft swinging scandal!!! Someone who didn’t make it to The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives

As Perezcious readers know, Taylor Frankie Paul shocked the internet two years ago when she revealed that she was soft swinging with other Mormon mommas in the MomTok community on TikTok. “Soft” because they hooked up with each other’s husbands — but supposedly didn’t go “all the way” together. Everything else, though? All fair game!

However, Taylor violated the group’s swinging policies and cheated on her husband, Tate. Cheated meaning she had full on sex with one of the other guys. The reality star told Nick Viall she had an “emotional affair” and then slept with him once at one of the parties! Yikes! When Taylor crossed the line, that marked the end of the arrangement — and her marriage to Tate. They got a divorce after she confessed to having an affair. Several other marriages came to an end, too. Plus, friendships were over. It was a huge mess… That unexpectedly launched a new reality TV hit.

As for the other couples involved in the swinging? Taylor never mentioned names. However, she later did say at the request of Chase and Miranda McWhorter, who were close with her and Tate, that they were not involved in the cheating scandal and not swingers. Hmm. Two years later, the truth about Miranda is coming out. It turns out they weren’t so innocent in all this!

How It Started

Miranda and Chase, who recently divorced, had long denied the rumors. However, Chase is changing his tune now! He admitted to Us Weekly on Thursday that they were swinging — just not hard swinging like Taylor! Chase explained to the outlet it was not until he left the Mormon church that he decided to own up to his part in the ordeal:

“That was the sole reason I was embarrassed to be a part of the first place was the optics. It was a learning experience, for sure, and looking back, we could have gone about it a lot of different ways.”

According to Chase, the “swinger parties” started innocently during the pandemic:

“It all started during Covid. … [It was] a bunch of our friends coming — couples — and then we’d all get trashed on alcohol and then, like, these games would come up. Spin the bottle or whatever.”

OMG, they were like a bunch of high schoolers! LOLz! Chase and Miranda often participated “in some of the party games,” he said. However, he insisted:

“It was never predetermined that we were going to be doing, like, swinging. That’s what we always thought was a little bit misrepresented in Taylor’s story, as she presents it.”

In other words, no one ever invited everyone to a “key party” or anything. Everything was a “snowball effect,” the dad said, with alcohol playing into a lot of what happened.

The Mormon Thing

There is also the fact that a lot of them are part of the Mormon church. Mormons follow a lot of strict rules, such as not drinking coffee or alcohol, using substances, or having sex outside of marriage (though you can do laughing gas, apparently). And that suppression of wilding out contributed directly to them getting into trouble, according to Chase. He feels how they “grew up” so sheltered factored into wanting to try out soft swinging:

“This is a bunch of people that grew up, for the most part, pretty Mormon and were in a lot of ways, I think, infantilized by the lack of these experiences they went through in college. So, this was kind of a new thing.”

As the group spent more time together, even renting cabins around Utah for their hook-up sessions, they crossed more and more lines. Yet Chase insists no one went into this thinking they would have sex with someone else’s spouse:

“I do think these marriages were struggling, most of them. Again, this is all people that have just grown up Mormon and really, in a lot of ways, not ever dabbled in some of the stuff that you’d probably just get through and experience in college or high school. But I don’t really ever think anyone thought, ‘We’re gonna eventually, like, switch and then have sex with that person.’”

But it did happen. Once that we know of.

Taylor Crossing The Line

Taylor’s indiscretions with one of the other husbands caused a LOT of damage. And before anyone asks, it was not Chase — supposedly. Before Taylor dropped the soft-swinging bombshell on TikTok Live in May 2022, the group found out about her affair. And despite what he’d seen, Chase recalls he was still “pretty stunned” by the revelation that she and Tate were doing “the actual swinging thing” with another couple:

“We found out that she had not only had an affair, but she had been having an affair for about a month and a half, and that this was not a one time offense. It was more [of an] emotional affair.”

At the time, the scandal felt “like a nuclear bomb [got] dropped” to Chase. Not only did it cause “two divorces” but ended Miranda’s friendship with Taylor. Chase claimed the Hulu personality did not like that “Miranda wasn’t really there right by her side [during the scandal].” So they went their separate ways. They are on friendly terms, though.

Chase said he and Miranda recently bumped into Taylor and her now ex-boyfriend Dakota Mortensen at a party. The former pals “seemed cordial” with each other and even “talked for, like 45 minutes.” But don’t expect Taylor and Miranda to become besties again. Chase noted his ex-wife will not “get that close” to Taylor again. It sounds like the former couple didn’t like how open she has been about the soft swinging scandal — even using it to get her clout and opportunities like The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives:

“I think we all have regrets. I think we all regret what happened. … We probably should have not been there. But at the same time, why does this have to be a public thing? It seems like this was all happening behind closed doors, and now Taylor’s using it as a springboard to notoriety when she’s the one that actually just cheated.”

Damn…

Hey, she knew how to play the game after several controversies. And look at her now! She’s on a hit show and loved by viewers due to her honesty!

Which Mormon Wives Were Swinging?

Fans did see Taylor talk about the scandal on Mormon Wives. But even her co-stars denied their involvement. Are they telling the truth? Chase claimed Whitney Leavitt definitely was not at the parties:

“I’ll tell you exactly who was never at any of the parties. Whitney [Leavitt] never came. I don’t think anyone wanted to kick it with Whitney.”

Ouch!

He confirms Mayci Neeley, Layla Taylor, Jessi Ngatikaura, and Jennifer Affleck were not in attendance, either. As Chase pointed out, Zac Affleck — who has come under fire for his controlling and narcissistic ways after he could not even handle her at a Chippendales show — would not have allowed Jen to do anything like that:

“Jen was never there … Her husband would have probably killed her.”

Whoa. Scary way to put that…

But who was there? Chase claims Demi and Bret Engemann “did come to some of the parties” — but never pushed any boundaries:

“They were just hanging out.”

So they got a front-row seat into what was going on at times?! Wow! We’re shocked Demi didn’t spill more tea on the matter during Mormon Wives then! Reactions, Perezcious readers? Drop ’em in the comments below!
