Selena Gomez & Benny Blanco Open Up About Managing Her Bipolar Disorder & 'Moments Of Mania'

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are getting candid about her mental health.

The Only Murders in the Building star appeared on her hubby’s podcast Friends Keep Secret on Tuesday, where the couple opened up to his co-hosts Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco about her struggles with bipolar disorder. Selena shared that getting diagnosed was “f**king complicated” because although she “knew something was wrong,” she would think she “was misdiagnosed.” The pop star said she went to multiple therapists and four different rehabs, which she is “grateful” for, because it “all helped me understand” the disorder.

For his part, Benny said there are moments when Selly is “having mania” and doesn’t know it. However, the 33-year-old actress will “start to realize” what’s going on afterward:

“She’ll start to realize she’s having it after, and sometimes she doesn’t even remember when it’s happening. It’s such a delicate thing ’cause you’re not supposed to technically talk to the person, really, about it while they’re deep in it, and even dating her, she’s, like, so hyper-aware. She’ll be like, ‘I think I’m feeling a little manic.’”

Selena made it clear she isn’t “ashamed” about her manic episodes, though. And it’s not something to be ashamed or embarrassed about. In fact, the Disney Channel alum said she is “so proud to say that I do have moments of mania” because recognizing them for what they are means she can “catch them a bit quicker” now. She continued:

“But it is helpful to have a partner that will understand where maybe the temperature is at, and meet you where you are, and then you kind of gradually understand what’s happening.”

Having a support system while struggling with your mental health is so important, and it sounds like Selena found the perfect person to stand by her side during these moments.

The Calm Down artist went on to say that getting diagnosed has allowed her to live life more “freely” and that it has helped her understand why she reacted the way she did to things at times:

“It finally allowed me to go, ‘Oh, that’s why I handled things the way I handled it. That’s why all the other people were able to get over things quickly and I wasn’t.’ And I would act out of fear and I would act out of love, I’d act out of passion, it was all inconsistent. It was crazy.”

What a raw and honest conversation. We appreciate how open Benny and Selena are about this topic. It’s refreshing and helpful for everyone, not just those with the disorder, to hear. Watch the discussion (below):
