Elton John On The Young Man With AIDS Who Saved His Life

Sir Elton John is an incredible person, but back in the 80s, self-hate coupled with cocaine addiction nearly led him down a path to self-destruction.
Then he read a magazine article about Ryan White, a young boy living in Indiana who had AIDS after a bad blood transfusion to treat his hemophilia.
Ryan was shunned by his entire town after news of his AIDS diagnosis broke.
He wasn’t allowed to go to school, he was shunned at local restaurants, he was even ostracized while in church.
No one showed him love. Except Elton.
After Elton heard about Ryan, he wanted to help.
After showing Ryan a life he could never have with private flights, concert tickets and trips to Disneyland, Ryan eventually succumbed to AIDS.
Elton had been so close to him and his mother, it was a huge loss.
After watching Ryan die, Elton realized himself, that he didn’t want to die.
He eventually decided to get clean.
No more cocaine, ease off the alcohol.
And he did.
His unlikely friendship with a young boy with AIDS saved his life.
