It may be quite a while before Thomas Markle gets to see his grandson — if ever? — but that’s not stopping Meghan Markle‘s estranged father from expressing pride about today’s royal birth.
The 74-year-old grandpa issued a statement from his Mexico home on Monday after the news first broke, congratulating Meghan and Prince Harry on the safe arrival of their first-born son and wishing the child well so as to “serve with grace, dignity, and honor.”

Though Thomas was about 5,500 miles away from Windsor’s Frogmore Cottage — where Meghan, Harry, and the new baby boy will make their home henceforth — the new grandfather was clearly very proud and emotional to hear news of the birth, and that Meghan was doing well after labor.
And though he didn’t receive a mention in the Palace’s official statement of the birth (Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, was mentioned), Thomas nevertheless seemed to take the high road… at least for this full statement (below) celebrating the birth of the baby boy:
“I’m delighted to hear that mother and child are doing well. I am proud that my new grandson is born into the British royal family and I am sure that he will grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honor. God bless the child and I wish him health and happiness, and my congratulations to my lovely daughter Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, and God save the Queen.”

The former Hollywood lighting director has kind of kept himself out of the public eye lately — at least, relatively so compared to some of his earlier antics during his rift with Meghan right around her wedding to Harry last year. Today’s announcement marks one of the first media moments the elder Markle has had in a while, ever since that particularly, um, difficult stretch about a year ago.

And though he may have fallen out of favor with the royal family (and, potentially, his daughter) a long time ago, we’re at least relieved that he managed to take the high road with this statement about the newborn child… right?
It may not be much, but hey — the road to redemption has got to start somewhere!!
