Travis Kelce’s tailor — no, not the popstar, the suit maker — is spilling his fashionable tea!
Tom Marchitelli of Gentleman’s Playbook has been the Kansas City Chiefs star’s tailor for YEARS now! Long before the other Taylor, Taylor Swift came into the picture! Ha! And he’s opening up about making custom suits for the athlete… And the one time he had to turn him down!
During an interview with Page Six published on Sunday, the designer proudly revealed Trav “slid right in” his DMs years ago to inquire about some tailor work after admiring one of Kansas City Royals star Eric Hosmer’s suits in 2015. Marchitelli told the outlet:
“Travis texted [Hosmer] and said, ‘Who made you that suit? I need that guy. And the next day, Travis DMed me and he said, ‘Hey, I heard you’re the guy. I need you to come tailor me for some suits.’”
What an awesome DM to receive!
The designer quickly agreed and met with the football star at his New York City hotel while wearing a plaid suit — which Travis apparently loved! He recalled:
“I knew that he wanted the fabrics that no one else would have. He was one of the first that really pushed me into [wilder looks]. He’s always had that eye to really push the envelope and wear things that got people talking, because that’s what he loves to do.”
It’s worked for him this far!
He cited some of the more memorable suits he’s made for the athlete, like a neon green ‘fit for the 2020 Miami Super Bowl, and a recent pinstripe number. See (below):
But he also fessed up about one suit he just couldn’t bring himself to make for Travis: a short suit!
He explained the tight end requested it for the 2018 ESPYs, which took place in the blazing LA summer heat:
“For that red carpet, Travis asked me to make him a short suit. It was LA; it was 100 degrees. I’m not in the business of telling anybody no — especially Travis Kelce — but I said, ‘Trav, I can’t do it. A short suit is not it right now. You’re a huge guy, you’ve got great legs, but it’s inelegant for a red carpet.’”
They instead went with a royal blue paisley suit — and boy did it end up being the “better move,” because when they arrived at the red carpet there were SIX other dudes wearing short suits! Marchitelli recalled:
“[Travis] looks at me at he goes, ‘You were right, Tom.’ Imagine being one of seven in short suits! He doesn’t want to be grouped in any type of category. He’s in his own league.”
That he for sure is!
And hey, if a wedding happens to be in Travis’ future, the designer will be ready to drop everything:
“I’ll be in line behind Christian Dior, Tom Ford, Thom Browne, Louis Vuitton, Amiri and everybody.”
HA! We’ll just have to see what happens tonight at the Super Bowl… Maybe Travis WILL come through with that proposal!
Reactions, Perezcious readers??
