Mark Messier

In September of 2001, the New York Rangers were scheduled to hold training camp at Chelsea Piers in NYC and stay in the Marriot Hotel at the World Trade Center.

Fortunately for the 60-man roster, including NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier, the dressing rooms weren’t adequate and the team was moved to Madison Square Garden. When tragedy struck on one of the darkest days in American history, the NHL team realized they could have just as easily lost their lives on 9/11.

Ten years later, Mark Messier is honoring the families of the victims who could not avoid perishing with the Twin Towers. The retired athlete is running the New York City Marathon on behalf of Tomorrow’s Children Fund, which benefits the wives and widows of the attacks.

Speaking on his commitment to giving back to the victim's families, Messier said:

Cake Boss Planning Tropical Cake For Vow Renewals

Cake Boss

Aww! How romantic!

Cake Boss baker Buddy Valastro recently surprised his wife, Lisa, with a marriage renewal proposal and is planning a cake to reflect the occasion.

The pair first wed in October of 2001, but Buddy feels the tragic events that shook the nation just a month before put a damper on the ceremony, as he explained:

"We got married in October 2001, less than a month away from Sept. 11 and as joyous an occasion as it was, everybody had a piece of their heart ripped out."

His wife was even too scared to get on a plane for their planned Hawaiian honeymoon! To make up for it, the couple will celebrate their 10th anniversary on October 14th during a tropical renewal ceremony.

"The cake is going to be a bit tropical with seashells and lace details," he told sources.

Of course, the TLC star will be baking it himself too, continuing:

"I was tempted to make a replica of my first wedding cake but that would be too easy. I'm a better baker now. It has to be to be special."

Congrats on ten years of happiness, guys! We hope it lasts a lifetime!

9/11 Firefights Have A Higher Risk Of Cancer

911 Firefighters Increased Cancer Risk

Ugh, this is so sad.

Firefighters who responded on 9/11 during that horrible, tragic day, have a higher risk of cancer according to a new study:

Male firefighters who were exposed to toxic dust and smoke from the 9/11 attacks on New York's World Trade Center have a 19 percent higher risk of getting cancer of all kinds than colleagues who were not exposed, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

Luckily though, this is not saying, "You're going to get cancer." This means an increased risk. So there are things that these firefighters can do to try and prevent it, but it's now a tougher prevention:

"For those who were down there and do not have cancer, this is not an epidemic, but it is an increased risk. So the most important thing to do is enroll in an active cancer prevention and screening program."

For firefighters and others who were exposed and have not yet developed cancer, Prezant advised lifestyle changes that can cut cancer risk — quitting smoking, limiting alcohol use, getting regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight.

Unfortunately, cancer is not yet covered under the 9/11 Health and Compassion Act, like asthma and some respiratory diseases are. But this new study is a step in the right direction in getting these deserving heroes the treatment they deserve.

And boy do they deserve it.

We thank each and every one of them for their heroism and sacrifice during that horrible time.
