Score one for the Sharks!

The New York Senate has UNANIMOUSLY passed a bill to ban shark fin trading!

But that won't mean squat unless the New York state Assembly passes the bill which many people are positive will happen.

On April 24th, the Senate will meet and discuss the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, a bill that will release 600 government held chimpanzees and ban invasive experiments on them.

Any time there's an election there are always a few joke candidates that people enter into the running to show how ridiculous the system is or to show their disapproval of certain candidates.

But this is one candidate we would certainly vote for!

A penguin, named Paula from the Newport Aquarium near Cincinnati, Ohio visited the Kentucky Senate.

The penguin was there as a guest when a resolution was proposed to honor the work the aquarium did for marine animals.

Then the penguin did the unthinkable… it pooped right on the floor in the middle of the Senate!!

The California political state got something right!

Yesterday, the CA Senate passed the bill to ban shark finning — a bill many celebrities have supported including Leonardo DiCaprio, Bo Derek, and Edward Norton.

Passing by a vote of 25-9, the bill is now in the hands of Governor Jerry Brown who is expected to sign it within the week. This new legislation will prohibit sale, trade, and possession of shark fins within the state.

This is great news for the environment! People may have their opinions of sharks, but they are greatly needed in order to keep the oceanic ecosystem intact.

Also, it's just plain cruel! Shark finning involves the slow, torturous death of sharks by hauling them aboard ships, cutting off their fins, and chunking them back into the water alive.

Humans kill around 73m sharks a year, but everyone agrees this is a step in the right direction! Since CA held the biggest demand for shark fins outside Asia, it's going to make an impact.

Great job, California!
