It's no secret that a night of boozing may damage our memory, but a new study suggests that's because boozing may be damaging our brains!
Published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, a study has found a "clear association" between binge drinking and difficulty with tasks linked to the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex brain regions. The hippocampus region's specifically affects our memory and ability to learn, while the prefrontal cortex affects our behavior functions.
The study gave a series of simple language and memory tests to 122 college students between the ages of 18 and 20. About half were self-identified binge drinkers and the rest drank alcohol moderately.
Students were asked to read lists of words, then recall as many of them as they could in increasingly difficult exercises. They were also told two stories, then asked to recount them as accurately as possible.
The results showed that binge drinkers performed worse than the other group in nearly all the word-based tests, finding they were more easily distracted by new information, recalled fewer words, and retained about 4 percent less of the information in the stories.
Thomas Hicklin, M.D., assistant professor of clinical psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Southern California, believes this study shows risks of drinking that students should be aware of, saying:
"This is an important topic and a multifaceted problem. There's a lot of peer pressure when it comes to binge drinking, but students need to protect their brains."
Luckily for fans of regular beer pong, researchers are not sure if any damage done to the hippocampus is permanent, but study authors aim to find out.
They have called for long-term studies that would follow groups of students before and after they started binge drinking regularly in hopes of clarifying the effects of heavy drinking on short-term memory and academic performance.
