Center fielder Matt Kemp and the Dodgers have agreed on a $160 million, eight year deal, that could be the most lucrative contract in team history.
What’s bizarre is that Kemp was just a year from free agency, and the Dodgers are bankrupt, so we’re not really sure how they can do it, and how responsible it looks to offer something as huge as that during trying financial times.
Mark Ellis also is getting a two-year, $8.75 million contract as well.
How many times should we bring up the bankruptcy thing again?
Here’s what Kemp had to say:
“You do think about it, you think about making money and all that, but I started playing baseball because it was fun. Money, it does definitely make life easier. It helps me take care of my family and some of my friends. It helps me touch lives and other people. That’s what I’m here to do. We play this game to be the best or try to be the best. I put all that hard work in the training room and the weight room and try to prepare my body for 162 games. When you’re considered to be one of the best, it’s motivation to be even better next year. This past year was a great year for me personally. It definitely set the bar, so I just have to have even better numbers next year.”
Don’t get us wrong, we still want to say congratulations to you, Matt. We aren’t saying you don’t deserve or anything.
We just don’t know if it’s responsible on the Dodger’s part.
