Celebrities have been fawning over these mini pigs as pets, however labs want them too.
These little pigs can cost up to £1,000 for a piglet!! These little guys have captured the hears of celebs such as, George Clooney and David Beckham to Paris Hilton and Megan Fox.
A five year study revealed that these little pigs would be better models for testing the effects of new drugs, since they are built more similarly to humans than mice and dogs are.
The report that was done explains:
“In particular, the cardiovascular system, skin and digestive tract are considered to be very good models for man. Because of these similarities, the toxic effects of chemicals and drugs in pigs may resemble the effects on man more closely than [their effects on] some other commonly used laboratory animals.”
Of course animal welfare groups are up in arms about this situation. They say that replacing one animal with another is not the way to stop animal testing!
We agree, we feel terrible for all the animals that are put through this. We hope these little pigs can escape!
