Oh no! Sadly, 7 more animals are being added to this horrid list.
The federal Fish and Wildlife Service announced this week that the black-hooded antwren, the cherry-throated tanager, the fringe-backed fire-eye and the southeastern rufous-vented ground-cuckoo, found almost exclusively in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biome, are endangered or near extinction.
Although the birds were already protected under Brazilian law, the Fish and Wildlife Service called the countries conservation efforts “inadequate”.
By listing the species as endangered under American law, it can help speed the flow of federal money toward international conservation projects and provide leverage in international negotiations to enhance protection efforts.
The birds have become endangered after deforestation, land clearing for agriculture and resource extraction that has destroyed much of their habitat.
So sad.
