Sharks can now breathe a sigh of relief.
The Food Network has taken down recipes with shark meat, including shark tacos, shark au poivre, and shark martinis (gross).
With the shark population drastically declining in huge numbers, 30,000 people signed the petition, asking Food Network to stop promoting shark meat. Within less than 10 days, the network responded and immediately took down all shark related recipes. They released this statement:
“As a policy, Food Network and Cooking Channel do not incorporate or showcase recipes that involve animals on endangered species list or the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch list, with the recent addition of sharks to those watch-lists, we will make sure that future content does not highlight shark as an ingredient. We understand there are many species with sustainability concerns, and we make efforts to stay informed and pass that information onto our audience.”
Good work, Food Network.
To help with the conservation of sharks, there are other petitions you can sign, including the banning the sales of shark in California, New York, and Toronto.
