So that’s what it was all about!
Michael Douglas had a very memorable speech after he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie!
He not only thanked his wife Catherine Zeta Jones, but the Behind The Candelabra actor made a reference to his son Cameron at the end of it when he said he was “hoping they allow me to see him soon.”
A lot of people were curious just what Michael meant, and the actor went into further detail later on in the evening.
Here’s what he said:
“Well, my son is in federal prison based upon -├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ he’s been a drug addict for a large part of his life and was arrested and selling drugs and is in federal prison. And part of their punishments if you happen to have a slip -├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ this is for a prisoner who is nonviolent — as about a half a million of our drug addicted prisoners are, they punish you. So for my son’s case, he’s spent almost 2 years in solitary confinement and right now I’m being told that I cannot see him for two years.”
This would cause any parent some serious emotional distress, and Michael is no exception!
In fact the actor has been wielding his celebrity power lately to try and see why he hasn’t been able to see his son for so long.
He continued:
“It’s over a year now and I’m questioning the system. Obviously, at first, I was certainly disappointed with my son, but I’ve reached a point now where I’m very very disappointed with the system and, as you can see, from what [U.S.] Attorney General Eric Holder has been doing — and other issues regarding our prison system — I think things are going to be revived regarding nonviolent drug addicts/criminals. My last comment on that is the United States represents 5 percent of the world’s population and we have 25 percent of the world’s prisoners.”
There’s definitely an abundance of prisoners in the United States, and it is definitely a very big problem!
We hope Michael Douglas is able to make some changes, and we also hope he’s able to see his son soon!
No parent should be away from their child for that long! Hang in there, Michael!
