This is so sad!
The World Series is supposed to be a celebratory time for two sports teams competing for the honor of the greatest team.
Unfortunately for Kansas City Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez, the first game was marked with tragedy; his father, Daniel Volquez, passed away hours before the start of the game.

Daniel — who was 63 years old and living in the Dominican Republic — died from complications of a heart condition.
However, Edinson reportedly didn’t find out about the passing until after the game. Royals manager Ned Yost said after the game:
“I don’t have any idea when he found out. You know, we found out about it before the game and the wishes of the family was, you know, let Eddie pitch. So I was kind of keeping my eye, didn’t want him to hear about it, I was keeping my eye on him. And he was fine. He didn’t know, and I guess after the game is when he found out.”
A spokesperson also released a statement that said they were under the impression that Volquez didn’t know about the death before the game and that the team asked FOX NOT to report it:
“We asked it not be reported until we were positive he was aware and when we knew he’d been told, we told Fox they could report it.”
FOX reporter Ken Rosenthal took to Twitter to address the the lack of reporting saying:
Fox Sports is aware of the news about the death of Edinson Volquez’s father but do not plan to report it on broadcast while he is in game.

Broadcast generally on in clubhouse. Conflicting reports on whether Volquez knows. We are not taking chance he would find out through us.

Rosenthal even gave an update today saying:
Edinson Volquez left with his family today to return to the Dominican Republic. He will rejoin the #Royals when the WS moves to New York.

We can’t imagine how hard this is for Volquez and his family. Our hearts go out to those affected from this tragic loss.
