Together with Tonic.com, Alyssa Milano has launched a campaign to raise $75,000 on behalf of the victims of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), also known as elephantiasis.
Transmitted through mosquito bites, the disease is found in tropical climates and impacts 120 million people world wide!
Often misheard as “Elephantitis”, the disease is characterized by the thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, especially in the legs and male genitals.
The actress is the founding Ambassador for the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Disease and discovered a program in India that helps those suffering from LF by teaching them how to care and treat themselves.
So far, the actress has raised a little over $2,000, but with only 6 days left, is too far from her goal!
On the fundraising site, she wrote:
“To keep the program alive it needs a major funding boost of $75,000. When you think about it, $75,000 isn’t very expensive – only about $3.25 per person, per year – a small amount of money can make a huge impact. That’s why, all this week, I’ve teamed up with Tonic, and the Global Network to ask all my fans to band together and contribute to this, the worthiest and most cost-effective cause we can imagine.”
