Benedict Cumberbatch is truly sorry.
After giving an interview in which he referred to black actors as “colored,” the Oscar nominee quickly issued an apology for the unfortunate gaffe.

The irony of the incident is The Imitation Game star was discussing racial inequality in the British entertainment industry and its need for more diversity.
In the interview, Cumberbatch said:
“As far as colored actors go, it gets really difficult in the U.K.”
Yeah, we think the actor could have used a better term to get his point across.
In response to the backlash from the charity group, Show Racism the Red Card, Benedict issued the following apology:
“I’m devastated to have caused offense by using this outmoded terminology. I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done. I can only hope this incident will highlight the need for correct usage of terminology that is accurate and inoffensive. The most shaming aspect of this for me is that I was talking about racial inequality in the performing arts in the U.K. and the need for rapid improvements in our industry when I used the term.”
We’re glad the actor took full responsibility for his actions — his words seem sincere.
