How much do dolphins and your typical college student have in common?
Apparently a lot more than you might realize!
A new BBC One documentary series called Dolphins: Spy in the Pod uses state of the art equipment get some AH-mazing footage of some of the world’s smartest creatures, but producers probably weren’t expecting this!
Apparently, dolphins like to get high by puffing on the toxins from a, well, puffer fish and they caught the whole thing on camera! Rob Pilley, a zoologist and a producer on the series commented on the footage, saying:

“This was a case of young dolphins purposely experimenting with something we know to be intoxicating. After chewing the puffer gently and passing it round, they began acting most peculiarly, hanging around with their noses at the surface as if fascinated by their own reflection.”

Wow! That sounds exactly like someone who’s just smoked some Mary Jane! Um, at least that’s what we’ve read. In a book. Somewhere.
The scene captures two dolphins aggravating a puffer fish to intentionally get it to release toxins, and then they take turns puffing on it!
In higher doses the toxins can be deadly, however in the amount they are taking in it’s just enough to get them a little high!
We’ve all heard puff puff pass, but puff puffer fish pass is definitely a new one!
