So sad!
Seven elephants were struck and killed by a speeding freight train in eastern India after two babies elephants strayed onto the tracks.
The older elephants were following their babies when all of them were hit by the train. “One of the elephants was dragged for about 400 meters (yards), while the other four died on the spot,” according to district official Kalyan Das. The other two were severely injured and died hours later.
Forest conservator S. Patel said “It is a ghastly sight.”
This isn’t the first time elephants have been killed by crossing the tracks between New Jalpaiguri and Assam, which is considered as a protected wildlife zone. More than 20 elephants have died there in little over a year, which has angered many local forest officials.
The officials plan to meet with India’s railway minister next week and discuss the latest incident.
Poor things! We hope changes can be made to keep other elephants and other wildlife safe from danger.
