There’s been some controversy over this, so allow us to clear the air…

With the passing of such well-known TV personalities as Cory Monteith and James Gandolfini, this year’s Emmy Awards are trying something a little different.

In addition to the classic In Memoriam segment, the show will also be host to a special honor for a few stars. Host Neil Patrick Harris says:

“We’ve come up with this idea ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ five different people that we chose sort of from different areas of television are being spoken about by people who were important to them, not in a pitying way, but I think in a respectful, classy way that will make you remember their life in a positive, forward-momentum kind of style.”

Cory and James will be remembered by their costars, along with three other TV legends- All In The Family‘s Jean Stapleton, Mork & Mindy star Jonathan Winters, and Family Ties producer Gary David Goldberg.

But the new special honors have sparked some controversy. Not everyone is happy with the choice of stars being honored. Jack Klugman‘s son Adam says:

“My dad was at the inception of television and helped build it in the early days. (Monteith) was a kid who had won no Emmys.”

But Emmy producer Ken Ehrlich defends the decision to single out the late Glee star. He says:

“Cory├óΓé¼Γäós appeal was to maybe a little different generation from some of the others we were honoring, and we felt maybe he needed to be represented. The fact that at 31, he passed away under tragic circumstances, the fact that we felt it was important to be responsive to younger viewers for whom Cory meant as much as these four others meant to their own generations.”

We’re sad to hear not everyone is at peace with the honors. We can only hope the ceremony will be pulled off with a class that transcends these personal concerns.
