We’d be more happy about this if we didn’t see it as a means to appease the gay community because of the fall-out of Prop 8. But regardless, the recognition is rightly deserved.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill commemorating the remarkable openly gay politician, Harvey Milk. The bill states that May 22, Harvey’s birthday, will now be honored as a day of remembrance and significance. Last year, the governor had originally vetoed the bill, claiming that it should be handled on a local level.
But as we said, there is a lot of bad blood between the gay community and the Californian government and Arnold is looking to mend fences. A spokesperson in his office was quoted saying:
“He really saw this signing as a way to honor the gay community in California…Milk has become much more of a symbol of the gay community.”
It is a well respected and overdue honor for Harvey. We’re sure his family and friends feel the same.
Just don’t think it will make us forget anything else, Arnold!
