How UFC Fighters Rapidly Alter Weight

A huge part of being a professional fighter is making sure you stay in your weight class, which is why fighters have developed techniques (that are not advisable for anyone else to do) for quickly losing/gaining weight.

UFC fighter Georges St. Pierre’s trainer Firas Zahabi explained what Georges is doing right now to lose weight:

├óΓé¼┼ôNow he’s on a protein and vegetable diet. Right now his exercise is significantly cut, but he’s going to shed water. It’s only temporary weight loss. It’s not real weight loss. You’re not dropping fat. (The final weight-cut) lasts about six days. By Friday he’ll have six or seven pounds left and we’ll put him in the sauna. I don’t recommend this to anybody, even professional athletes. This is somebody who’s very seasoned.├óΓé¼┬¥

After he weighs in — hopefully at 170 — he will down a recovery drink and then eat normally until the fight, at which point he will weigh 192 lbs.

This is NOT something worth trying at home. As the trainer said, it’s temporary weight loss. It won’t help in the long run!
