The U.S. has lost one great legal mind.
On Monday Janet Reno, who was the first woman to serve as the U.S. Attorney General, passed away due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. She was 78 years old.

The late powerhouse attorney’s goddaughter Gabrielle D’Alemberte confirmed the heartbreaking news with the Associated Press. It’s said Reno was surrounded by her family and friends in her Miami home during her final days.
While Janet was well-respected in her field for years, she faced quite a bit of criticism during her tenure as attorney general. As you may recall, Reno served almost eight years under President Bill Clinton — which made her the second-longest serving attorney general in the country’s history. Color us impressed!
The often blunt legal expert received some backlash early in her career, especially for the raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, TX where sect leader David Koresh and around 80 of his followers died. Not to mention, Reno infuriated the Cuban-American community in her hometown of Miami when she authorized the seizure of Elian Gonzalez which resulted in his inevitable return to Cuba.
Still Janet left quite the legacy behind as the six-foot-tall academic once famously revealed she became a lawyer because she “didn’t want people to tell [her] what to do.” AH-Mazing!
