If this doesn’t hit a nerve, nothing well.
On Sunday, Jay Leno kicked off the 28th annual Love Ride in Glendale, CA with some words of humor than ended up being fatally true. Two riders crashed and died during the ride after following Leno’s advice of not driving safely.
Romarion Zeri and his partner Julie Cameron were killed when their motorcycle collided with a big rig on the freeway in Pacomia, CA. The rig’s tires ran over the pair, killing them instantly, as paramedics pronouced them both dead at the scene.
No doubt this tragic accident, the first in the event’s history, will haunt Leno for quite a while, as only an hour before, he joked that he wanted to see “somebody go down” in the ride that day. In his grand marshall speech prior to the start of the ride, he said to the crowd:
“Every year, [the organizer] says, ‘Drive safe.’ I’m gonna say, ‘Don’t drive safe.’ I wanna see somebody go down. So it’ll be fun. I want it to be in front or behind me and see a whole row of bikes go down. Get drunk, fall off the road. We’ve all become too damn polite … we haven’t had one incident.”
Well, now you’ve had one. Is this what you wanted, Jay?
Of course, we know it wasn’t and we recognize he was just trying to be funny. But under the circumstances, we bet he really wishes he didn’t joke that way.
