It’s officially over for Jeffree Star and Nathan Schwandt.
On Saturday, the 34-year-old makeup artist confirmed he and his longtime boyfriend have called it quits after five years together. The sad news comes just one day after the YouTube star seemed to hint at the pair’s separation with a cryptic tweet about “pain.”
However, according to his latest video, things have apparently been over for “weeks” now.

In the new 17-minute-long vid titled We Broke Up, Star fought back tears as he explained the reasons for the split. A brief description alongside the confessional reads:
“Thank you all for the love and support during this difficult time. ? I’ll be back to filming and creating with makeup soon.”
Speaking directly to his 17.1 million subscribers and the world, Jeffree admitted:
“There’s no easy way to say this but we did break up. I’ve used a lot of this time of silence to just try to heal, you know. We’re both in a state of shock. I’m devastated. I’m so sad and the love of my life is no longer- wait, I don’t wake up to him anymore. He’s no longer here every morning and my routines have changed and I’m just in a state of shock right now. We both are.”
Star continued, taking a moment to address any inaccurate rumors circulating about the painful breakup:
“This isn’t like an Internet fight. This isn’t drama, this isn’t tea. This is my real life and me and my soul mate are really going through it and we’re both…we’ve both been through so much the last few years. I feel like I owe you all an explanation because Nathan and I have grown with each other in front of all of you and I can’t believe he’s not here right now.”
So, what exactly happened?
As we mentioned earlier, fans were really concerned after Jeffree shared (then deleted) a message on Twitter where he sounded quite distraught. He also pulled out of an upcoming scheduled makeup tour across several European cities fellow MUA, MMMMitchell, which only fueled our curiosity and desire to know the truth.
From the way the beauty guru tells it, he and his now ex-boyfriend found it increasingly difficult to love each other through some recent hardships. He explained:
“A few years ago, Nathan lost his grandfather in a very tragic way. You guys know that me and Nathan, we lost two dogs last year…and we still haven’t even fully processed that. He hasn’t even processed his grandfather yet. We haven’t processed our dogs fully because this lifestyle is so crazy and we’re always on to the next thing, filming the next thing, me and him have never just sat down and processed our emotions. We’re both broken and we were both so busy being there for each other that we forgot to be here for ourselves, and that’s what 2020 is—is focusing on our own selves.”
Wow. That does sound like quite a lot to go through…
Of course, some couples are able to really lean on each other throughout life’s highs and lows — but it can be really difficult to provide strength for someone else when you aren’t exactly in the best frame of mind on your own. A clean break to reset and digest their personal issues might be what these two need if they ever intend on giving things another try someday.
While Star noted he and Schwandt will be “friends forever,” things are over for the forseeable future:
“I will always have love for him. Are we in love with each other? No. But we love each other and he will always be in my life.”
