Katie Holmes Says She & Suri Cruise 'Grew Up Together' In Rare Interview

In a rare public interview, Katie Holmes is speaking out about everything you want to know.

Well not everything everything, like her former relationship with Tom Cruise or recent split from Jamie Foxx, though the Logan Lucky actress does open up quite a bit to Elle UK about growing up with Suri Cruise and what’s on the horizon for her.

But first, ch-ch-check out her cover look (below):

Life With Suri

Above all else, people are most interested in her 13-year-old daughter Suri, but the momma bear doesn’t seem too willing to expose much of their private life together, despite near-constant headlines about the relationship (or lack thereof) the teen has with her estranged father. Holmes was only 27 when her daughter was born, and she noted enjoying that they have grown up together:

“I was happy to become a mum in my twenties. It’s been nice that our ages fit… how do I put this? Every age that my child has been and my age at that time has been a good match. We kind of grew up together.”

As for their home in NYC, the 40-year-old does her best to keep things comfortable:

“It’s really homey. I have a lot of pictures. I like vintage art from flea markets. Because we’re in New York, I want our apartment to be very cosy and soft – the city around us is so intense and hard. So that’s our style. And a lot of colours.”

‘Dawson’s Creek’ Reunion

Last year, the series which made her a household name celebrated its 20th anniversary, and it didn’t go unnoticed by the Dawson’s Creek cast — James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams, Busy Phillips — who got together for a photo shoot and dinner:

“It was really nice. We all went out to dinner and, I think, for all of us to really sit back in amazement that people still watch it and care about it. It was bigger than all of us and we all feel grateful that we got to contribute to it and benefit from it. We all got so many opportunities because of it.”

But her role as Joey Potter almost didn’t happen! Holmes reminisced about nearly not getting the part because she was acting in her school play, Damn Yankees, and didn’t want to miss it for an audition in Los Angeles. Luckily, she was able to submit a video and scored the job:

“I was playing Lola. I even got to wear the feather boa. I thought, there is no way I’m not playing Lola to go audition for some network. I couldn’t let my school down… so I told Kevin [director Kevin Williamson] and [TV network] The WB, ‘I’m sorry, I just can’t meet with you this week. I’ve got other commitments.'”

Living Without Social Media

Part of what makes Holmes so enigmatic is that she very much flies under the radar, sans social media. While she has an Instagram account (with 1.8 million followers), Katie doesn’t seem to be the biggest fan of the app:

“I don’t use [Instagram] that much and, if I do, it’s usually just work geared. You can start to look at all these strangers and think you know them and there’s no way that can encapsulate a whole person. You’re just seeing a version of them and you always have to keep that in mind. It’s just a picture. You don’t know them. You don’t know their past.”

As for influences on her daughter, who has grown up surrounded by technology and social media, Miz Holmes seems to be like most other parents of Gen Z when asked if she worries about Suri:

“Doesn’t every parent? But, yes, of course I’m worried. There is so much bad news and hate and things that don’t make sense… The atmosphere around the world is… terrifying.”

So, What’s Next?

When asked if her recent landmark birthday changed her perspective on work, the Ohio native responded:

“Not really, no! I directed my first film, All We Had, a couple of years ago and I’ve been working to get my second film ready so I’m excited to continue. It’s interesting to be 40, though, because when you’re young, you think, ‘I’m never going to be 40!’ And then the day comes and it’s like, this is OK. I’m still doing everything I’ve always done. I feel happy with where my career is and I’m excited for the projects that I have coming up to come to fruition.”
