Mackenzie Hancsicsak is serving up a powerful message to girls of all shapes and sizes!
In a new interview with People, the actress, who plays young Kate on This Is Us, opens up about her time with the Girl Scouts and explains how being a real life troop member has given her a platform to influence change.

The 11-year-old dishes:

“Being a Girl Scout makes me so proud. I want to be a role model to girls and do things to make the world a better place.”

She’s already off to a great start, thanks to her role on the hit NBC drama. For those who don’t know, Mackenzie’s Kate struggles with weight issues on the show, especially in the older form of the character portrayed by Chrissy Metz.
While the This is Us actress has the power of primetime television and Thin Mints at her disposal, she says every girl can use her own interest to unleash the power inside them, adding:

“All girls, no matter what you look like or what your interests are, have this power in them to be and do whatever it is they want.”

Before you go off thinking that the Girls Scouts is all about social reform, Mackenzie makes it clear there’s plenty of fun to be had, too:

“I’d always sell cookies at a booth with two of my really good friends. We’d do skits or sing, and it’s just so fun for everybody.”

She adds that her time with the troop even serves as a nice vacation from the stresses of Hollywood life, admitting:

“Sometimes people act different with me because I’m on TV — they want to know who I know or ask me lots of questions about the show. But the girls in my Girl Scout troop are different. They like me for me. They’re my best friends in the world, and I know I can count on them to be there for me no matter what.”
