The reviews for Pitch Perfect 3 are in — and based on what the critics are saying, the Barden Bellas went out on a breathless note. And a few flat aca-puns.

All your favorite stars return for the sequel, which shows Beca (Anna Kendrick), Chloe (Brittany Snow), Aubrey (Anna Camp) and Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) reuniting with the Bellas for a post-college USO Tour… in the scenic French Riviera… that’s also a battle of the bands… where the winner gets a record deal with DJ Khaled!

If the central competition isn’t ridiculous enough, a random long lost dad-turned Bella kidnapping plot was the nail in the franchise’s aca-coffin.

Sure, the critics are still gonna miss these girls when they’re gone — but many agreed that should have been two films ago. Aca-ouch!

Frank Sheck, The Hollywood Reporter: “Franchise fatigue is evident throughout this mechanical enterprise, which squanders the good will engendered by the original 2012 sleeper hit and, to a lesser extent, its even more commercially successful 2015 sequel. Whatever charms the first two movies possessed (and they were considerable thanks to the talented and appealing cast) have been thoroughly lost in this soulless installment.”

Owen Gleiberman, Variety: “The new film doesn’t add anything revolutionary to the Pitch Perfect formula. It still sounds like we’re in middle-period Glee written by someone who finds Ryan Murphy too solemn. But as directed by Trish Sie, the movie is bubbly, it’s fast, it’s hella synthetic-clever, and it’s an avid showcase for the personalities of its stars.”

Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly: “At a scant 93 minutes, PP3 is really more like an extended short than a movie anyway; one last daffy victory lap for the ladies who taught us how far friendship ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ and a franchise ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ can carry itself on hard work, matching halter tops, and a whole lot of mouth music.”

Dan Callahan, TheWrap: “[Rebel] Wilson’s comic routines here set her apart from the others in the cast, and they more than amply hint that she should be set loose in her own vehicles far, far away from the other girls and all their Glee-like karaoke.”

Emily Yoshida, Vulture: “Pitch Perfect 3 struggles most when it tries to make us care about [Beca’s] music career, and it tries a lot… Even more curious is the material given to Rebel Wilson’s Fat Amy, who had become a full-on caricature in the last film and now is being asked to carry a long-lost-dad plot opposite John Lithgow. Neither seem to have any idea if their arc is supposed to be funny or not, nor do I.”

Alan Scherstuhl, The Village Voice: “The good news, I guess, is that Pitch Perfect 3, directed by Trish Sie (Step Up: All In), is not overtly racist in the manner of its predecessor. Instead, the non-white Bellas are just afterthoughts ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ is that an improvement? There’s nothing like parity of screen time, but there is in memorableness.”

Simon Thompson, IGN Movies: “While this has a few laugh-out-loud moments, overall, this is an adequate farewell performance that too often falls flat and feels off-key.”

Maria Reinstein, US Weekly: “The Barden Bellas don’t go out on a winning note. The movie is tone-deaf. The characters are off-Pitch. It’s not over until Fat Amy sings, and she does! Pick any music pun, and the disappointing result is the same.”
