We knew Prince Charles was passionate about red squirrels; he helped found the Red Squirrel Survival Trust, after all.
But we didn’t realize how close the heir to the throne was to the project.
In the new issue of Country Life magazine, which the Prince of Wales guest edited for his 70th birthday, Prince William reveals:
“He is completely infatuated by the red squirrels that live around the [Birkhall] estate in Scotland — to the extent that he’s given them names and is allowing them into the house!”
OMG, how adorable!

Not only that, he apparently keeps nuts in his pockets for the creatures! He writes:
“They come into the house at Birkhall and we get them chasing each other round and round inside. If I sit there quietly, they will do so around me. Sometimes, when I leave my jackets on a chair with nuts in the pockets, I see them with their tails sticking out, as they hunt for nuts — they are incredibly special creatures.”
In all seriousness, the squirrels really are in danger. Over the past few decades their numbers have dwindled from 3.5 million to 250,000, and the RSST warns they’ll be gone completely in just 10 years’ time.
If Prince Charles can’t find a way to solve it anyway.
As William says, his dedication is peerless:
“His passion for the environment and the natural world is something I want to repeat in the way I raise George, Charlotte, and Louis.”
We just hope they can still talk to squirrels when they’re Charles’ age.
