You better watch out, Empire.
If there’s anyone who knows what it’s like to have a successful musical drama on FOX, it’s Ryan Murphy.
And although Glee may have been replaced by Lee Daniels‘ take on the hip hop genre in early 2015, Ryan still has some advice for the Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard vehicle on how to avoid going downhill despite phenomenal early ratings.

In a recent interview, the Emmy-winning director cited his relationship with his cast as a reason behind Glee‘s descent into irrelevancy, saying:
“I look at the Empire cast and everything that’s going on with them, and I’m just like, ‘Don’t do it. Keep it together.’ And I think they have in the way that we never did. To this day, I’m devastated by everything that happened with [Glee]…
I was there with [the cast] all day long, and then we’d finish work and we’d go out and have fun all night, and I guess in a weird, twisted way, I was trying to relive the childhood I never had. I thought they wanted a parent, and they didn’t. They didn’t want me to tell them what to f***ing do. They didn’t want me to tell them how to treat each other or what the world was like at the end of the day. I wish I could go back and do that differently with a lot of those actors. Some of them I’m still very close to — Lea Michele, Chord Overstreet, Darren Criss — but there were some that didn’t work out well, and I regret that. I guess I just wish I had been able to let them figure it out for themselves.”
We guess that explains why Lea’s the only Glee lead to take part in any of his other shows, aside from guest stars NeNe Leakes on The New Normal and Neil Patrick Harris on American Horror Story: Freak Show, of course.

Even though Glee‘s fall from grace was quite public, we don’t think he has anything to feel ashamed about:
Scream Queens hasn’t gotten cancelled yet despite less-than-stellar ratings, and AHS isn’t leaving FX anytime soon — it’s the network’s highest rated show.
