When we first heard the Satanic Temple were threatening to sue Netflix over The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, we wrongfully assumed it was just some classic HEY SATANISTS AREN’T LIKE THAT stuff.
But nope. Just boring old copyright infringement.
And they have a case, too.

The show’s witch school, The Academy of the Unseen Arts, has a statue dedicated to the Dark Lord in its entrance hall — and it’s just about an exact replica of the Satanic Temple’s.
Co-founder Lucien Greaves shared this comparison to their own copyrighted monument to Baphomet:

Tough to argue that.
It certainly seems that instead of creating their own statue, Sabrina‘s art department (or VFX, the thing looks pretty CG) used the work of another artist. Without permission or compensation.
After demanding it be removed from the show, according to legal docs obtained by The Blast, they’ve moved ahead with their case.
They’re suing Netflix and Warner Bros. for copyright infringement, trademark violation, and injury to business reputation — for an ungodly total of $150 million!!!
The Temple is especially upset over the associations the show made with their monument, per the complaint:
“Defendants misappropriated the TST Baphomet Children in ways implying that the monument stands for evil. Among other morally repugnant actions, the Sabrina Series’ evil antagonists engage in cannibalism and forced-worship of a patriarchal deity.”
(OK, so there’s a *bit* of the old classic.)
They’re also seeking an injunction to keep the show from being distributed as long as it has their statue in it.
Does this mean the show will actually be taken off the streaming service so the statue can be digitally replaced??
