Star Trek Cast & Crew Hold A Moment Of Silence For Anton Yelchin At Poignant Comic-Con Premiere

The cast of Star Trek Beyond took flight at the film’s premiere on the opening night of San Diego Comic-Con on Wednesday.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana stunned on the red carpet with more of the cast of the sci-fi reboot — many of them wearing black Starfleet lapel pins to honor Anton Yelchin.
Before the screening began, producer J.J. Abrams gathered the rest of the cast — including Idris Elba, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Sofia Boutella, and John Cho — to the stage to pay respects to their late costar, who died in a freak accident last month.

Abrams asked the audience to participate in a moment of silence to pay tribute to the 27-year-old, saying:

“As wonderful as this is to be here with all of you and to be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, there is something wrong tonight. There is something missing tonight. There is someone missing tonight. Anton Yelchin should be here. Anton’s parents are here, Irina and Victor. We love their son, and if I could ask everyone to have a moment of silence for our dear friend, Anton.”

After the moment of silence, the San Diego Symphony played a medley of Star Trek theme music as a light show and fireworks went off over the crowd’s head.
Quinto also paid tribute to the actor who originated the iconic role of Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy — who passed away last year just before production began. He added:

“I just want to take a moment to honor him, to acknowledge him, to celebrate him and to love him. We all carry him with us in our heart tonight.”

Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on Friday.
