Oooh, Tracy Morgan!!!
While all of his apologies, both verbal and through action, seemed super sincere, he backtracked a little when he interviewed with David Letterman.
Back in June, he made horrific comments at a Tennessee stand-up, saying things like he would stab his son to death if he ever found out he was gay, being gay is a choice because God makes no mistakes, gays need to quit complaining about bullies, etc..
Of course, the whole, ‘but I’m a comedian’ excuse came into play right after. But so did some sincere apologies.
We were content with his efforts. But now he says things like, “I just think it was a misunderstanding, I was up there working.”
Sigh…
While there is a misunderstanding, we believe it’s the one that lies in any comedian’s head who thinks it’s excusable to make homophobic comments under the guise of comedy.
It’s one thing to joke about other cultures in a lighthearted way, but when you twist the joke into something extremely offensive against the traits of said culture, especially when you add violence in there, well…that sh*t is just not funny.
Even the queen of comedy, Tina Fey, agreed it wasn’t appropriate, having said:
The violent imagery of Tracy’s rant was disturbing to me at a time when homophobic hate crimes continue to be a life-threatening issue for the LGBT community.
We do think Tracy means well, but he needs to learn how his influence can really affect things.
