Leno Scolded By Writers Guild

Filed under: TV News > Jay Leno

mx0035210__opt1.jpg

When Jay Leno returned to the airwaves on Wednesday without his striking scribes, he announced that he had written his opening monologue, a violation of the Writers Guild strike rules.

Tisk. Tisk.

The WGA sent out the following statement on Thursday, reprimanding educating Leno about his responsibilities.

"A discussion took place today between Jay Leno and the Writers Guild to clarify to him that writing for The Tonight Show constitutes a violation of the Guilds' strike rules."

David Letterman will have an advantage over Leno for the time being. The Late Show host is back with his entire writing staff, a deal he was able to broker independently with the Writers Guild because Letterman, unlike Leno, owns his show.

For the love of all that is good, he was forced back to work and has supported you this whole time but he needs to earn a living too! The writers are not the be all and end all and alot of people who don't make as much as they do like production staff, camera crews etc are out of work too. Jay can't just stand there, he needs to do something.

These writers suck. They complain about everything. I'm so sick of hearing about their whining. Suck it up and be happy you have a job because many people don't. America is sick to death about hearing about the writers. We don't care. And I'm sure you can easily be replaced. People in Hollywood think everything revolves around them but it doesn't. Either go back to work and put out your mediocre talent or shut the eff up. We don't care. We'll watch movies, read a book, or entertain ourselves online. WE DON'T CARE.

They are the ones striking why punish him. He can't do anything about it. They chose their profession, they need to deal with how they are being treated. No ones fault but theres. I have a friend in Cali that wrote for Leno, he said he wants to go back to work but the stupid reps are preventing it.

  32. Realist says – reply to this

    32

This assumes that the writers would come up with something beter than Leno himself could. A big assumption. Some shows would probably do better without the writers. Like SNL. They eat shit. It'd probably be much funnier if the comedians performed off the cuff.

  33. LISA says – reply to this

    33

Those writers are just mad that their jobs can be easily replaced. This is so annoying. For once I admired Jay because he wrote some jokes and Conan didn't. Now I find out that he can't do it anymore. I bet he wrote out some questions that he asked guests too. Is he not allowed to do that anymore either? Give me a break.

    -
NOT TRYING TO MARGINALIZE THE WGA'S POINT, BECAUSE I *DO* THINK THEY ARE RIGHT; HOWEVER…..I'M ALL OUT OF SYMPATHY FOR THE WRITERS.
    -
FIRST, THEY CALL OFF TALKS….ENSURING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IS BEING ACCOMPLISHED. AFTER THAT HISSIE FIT WAS DONE, THEY START TALKING AGAIN.
    -
BUT NOT BEFORE LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF STAFF AND CREW LOSE THEIR JOBS — MOST OF WHOM ARE MAKING A FRACTION OF WHAT THE AVERAGE WRITER MAKES.
    -
IF YOU CAN NOT GET WHAT YOU WANT AND DESERVE WITHOUT HURTING PEOPLE WHO AREN'T INVOLVED, THERE'S PROBABLY A GOOD REASON FOR IT.
    -
BEING TREATED UNFAIRLY IS NOT A LICENSE TO 'PAY IT FORWARD.'
    -
TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT.
    -
P.S. WRITER'S GUILD "SCALE" (SUGGESTED MINIMUM) PAY FOR WRITING A 30 MINUTE SITCOM IS AROUND ***TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS***. WHICH DOESN'T INCLUDE ANY RESIDUALS, ETC.
    -
THIS STRIKE IS ABOUT ROYALTIES ON INTERNET AND DVD INCOME, BACK-END PAY. THAT 20K SITCOM SCRIPT, OVER THE YEARS, IS WORTH QUADRUPLE. AND THAT'S BEFORE THE NET AND DVD INCOME.
    -
MY HEART IS BLEEDING! THAT IS A PITTANCE! I WONDER WHAT ALL THE PA'S, GRIPS, STAND-INS, ETC WERE MAKING BEFORE GETTING CANNED BECAUSE 80K IS NOT ENOUGH FOR THE WRITERS? 18 BUCKS AN HOUR?
    -

I love how all the IDIOTS on this board and in the United States

Demonize anyone who does a job that requires THOUGHT

e.g. WRITING, teaching, being a professor, being a scientist, etc.

You are all idiots and you have the STUPIDEST PRESIDENT in the HISTORY of the United States

and THE WORST ECONOMY to PROVE it.

YOU THINK THE WRITER'S are ASSHOLES for wanting FAIR PAY for what they do

AND DON'T KID YOURSELVES. YOU CANNOT DO WHAT THEY DO (proof? This board!)

That kind of thinking is why most of you make minimum wage at WALMART!

I'm sick to death of this 'strike'. More like a hissy fit, the days of unions are over. If you don't like your job, get another one and stop being a big baby. Damn!

Go Jay, David, John, ETC Great job and welcome back. Who needs those lousy writers anyways, You guys are tops!!

Besides, whats gonna happen, the guild police gonna arrest him and put him in writers cell block 29? All you JAYHATERS,, LEAVE MY JAY ALONE!

So crawl back in your hole and suck off that CEO for your money SCAB!

  54. hrow@comcast.net says – reply to this

    54

Both sides in the dispute are immovable and probably equally self-serving, but one has to wonder exactly what it is that the writers are trying to get, and by extension, establish. There is the right of the union to strike and there is the right of the businessmen to operate their businesses, but this present issue might be encroaching on a more fundamental proposition — who owns the business, the employer or the employee?

  55. Lamb Chop says – reply to this

    55

Leno (and Conan) still drew in more viewers than Letterman by a couple of million households. They're both between a rock & a hard place - members of the Writers Guild and hosts of their own programs. Tough call, but if the Guild is allowing some things to go on and others not to, then I have to question their motives when they send these mixed messages. Either stirke or don't - but don't give in to some and not others. Make up your minds already because now it's becoming annoying.

  56. MADELINE says – reply to this

    56

Re: walmart workers rules!!!!! WELL THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TO WORK AT WALMART IF THEY'D STOOD UP FOR THEIR RIGHTS 20 YEARS AGO LIKE THE WRITERS ARE DOING. WHY IS IT OKAY TO BASH THE WRITERS AND NOT THE PEOPLE WHO CAPITULATED TO THE POWER 20 YEARS AGO, RUINED THEIR COMMUNITIES, AND NOW WORK AT WALMART FOR MINIMUM WAGE AND WANT TO DRAG THE REST OF THE WORKERS DOWN WITH THEM? THEY ARE NO HEROES!

  57. Lamb Chop says – reply to this

    57

Re: mary hartman – You know, I did support the writers, and still do - to some extent. But they need to be united and not make exceptions. Isn't that the strength in a successful strike? So, any wavering of support from the general public (and others) is a result of the writers own actions.

Jay stated on his show that it's not a violation if he writes and presents his own material, which he was very careful to do. He said that was the rule, according to the SWG.

And speaking of Wal-Mart - - When did they abandon 'Made in America' products for 'Made in China' products? They use to brag about "Made in the USA" - now they don't brag - they just sell cheap Chinese stuff.

  62. Melissa says – reply to this

    62

The writers are starting to annoy me. The whole point of striking is to have all of your members striking, not making deals with certain shows so some writers are allowed to work and the rest aren't. Some awards shows are allowed to happen and some aren't. It's ridiculous. It should be all or nothing. They have no credibility in my eyes.

  63. mary hartman says – reply to this

    63

Re: Lamb Chop – Letterman owns his company and gave the writers what they demanded. Everything they demanded. Personally I am with you…but moreso…I think EVERYONE should strike en masse - like Paris in 1968. Look at all the privileges and benefits the French people won by doing so (despite the fact that Sarkozy wants to reverse these things to some extent because the economy can no longer support everything they won) but the fact is THEY WON! They won because students, transporation workers, professors, industrial workers, shop keepers, everyone marched in the streets at the same time! THAT's how you do a real STRIKE! People forgot that with Reagan somehow and the standard of living FOR MOST AMERICANS has been declining ever since.

Some of you are such morons!!! The WGA wants to make a deal with the producers. Dave's company made them the deal they wanted. The WGA isn't being selective — if you give them the deal, you get your writers.

Ellen is also a member of the WGA but she didn't violate their rules by writing her own monologue. Jay is stupid — especially since NBC is apparently forcing him to leave the show next year against his wishes. Why should he do anything for them.

Or quit paying and let his staff go broke. There are 179 people who are being supported for the last 2 months by him. The WGA should just shut up, and I'm a writer saying that.

the writers are definitely greedy. I produce renderings for architecture firms that net 5,000 each when sold to the clients. how much do you think i make off that? not even 10 percent of that. Its unfair but im glad i have a job, architecture firms would simply just hire someone else to do it. which is what the shows should do. hire writers who want to work.

    77

What the fuck? How could Leno NOT know about the rules? This strike has been the biggest story in show business for two months and he doesn't bother to check and see what the rules are? What a douche. And by the way, I flipped back and forth between both Letterman and Leno last night and they were both terrible except for the Robin Williams appearance on Letterman, which was funny. Letterman is not funny anymore and Leno is too much of a kiss ass to do any edgy humor. I tried to watch Conan after Leno and turned that off after ten minutes because it was painful. They should have continued supporting the strike instead of televising this shit.

  78. aron says – reply to this

    78

Hey, networks, fire all the writers like Reagan did in the 80's to the air controllers and hire new writers. There are writers out there that don't belong to the guild and will be happy to have a job. $250,000 and the writers are complaining, whatever.

  79. Hannah says – reply to this

    79

I don't know how to feel about the writers, because in reality i don't really know what they are asking for or being offered. BUT…the wga keeps wanting sag to support the writers, but i feel sort of bad for the new actors who got noms. how awful would that be to get a big break and not get to go to the red carpet? Also, economically speaking, strikes are not beneficial for anybody. Think of all the production crew out of jobs! Strikes are an economic accident. And if SAG strikes this summer like they are planning too (the most idiotic thing i've ever heard) and i saw a single A-lister, hell any celebrity on a picket line, i think i'd vomit. Wow, so really, that 10 mil you made last year wasn't enough?

Okay, this writers strike is RIDICULOUS and it's time for it to end. Yes, the writers aren't getting the money for the DVDS… but they're getting a hell of a lot more money than I am and they're actually doing something that they love. Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien HAD to get back to their shows because they're are NON UNION writers who haven't had any income because of this. They are just doing what's right and everyone needs to get over it.

Hey Jeesh, moron, do the writers striking prevent me from watching movies in the theatre now or renting them in the store now? No. So like I said, I don't care. I seriously doubt this blip on the radar of a strike will affect future movies being put out there but if it does, guess what, still don't care. Most TV and movies suck anyway so less of them isn't really a problem. They have a right to strike and I have a right to not give a flying rip.

You Perez readers lack any understaning of the WGA strike. These are working, creative individuals striking against international corporations who don't want to pay the writers anything for their work streamed over the internet. Meanwhile, the corporations are earning literally billions of dollars on this work. The WGA fight is your fight, assuming you are a working person who earns less than, say, a million dollars a year.

I support the writters and think they deservive a fair pay. But what is 'fair' can be debated.

To quote Jay: "It was basicly 19 people putting 120 people out of work for 2 months."

He supports the union and didn't hire new writters. He wrote the jokes himself like back in the day when he first started the show without writters.
