Oh lambs, it’s over! Mimi’s new album is done! Cooked! And it’s not succulent and ready to eat. It’s dead. It’s stale. And no reheating can save it!
We may tease her but we are a fan of Mariah Carey. We like her music. We admire and respect her. And we expect more from her!
Unfortunately, she has lost touch with who she is in the marketplace and what people want to hear from her. She also doesn’t know what makes a hit single anymore!
Carey’s new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, has already been pushed back not once but twice. And, after the first single, Obsessed, was a disappointment, Mimoo her record label are now releasing a cover as Mariah’s second single.
Unfortunately, the cover isn’t all that amazing and won’t be a huge smash on radio. In this day and age, if you want to sell records – lots of them – you need to get played on the radio. A lot!
Carey’s version of Foreigner‘s I Wanna Know What Love Is is mediocre at best. It is uninspired and too faithful to the original. Yes, Mariah sounds great on the song, but it takes more than just her voice to make a single a hit. The song needs to be as good as she is. In this case, it’s not. Listen to the song below.
If anything, Mimi’s I Wanna Know What Love Is will be a hit on Adult Contemporary stations. But we would be very very very surprised if it becomes a massive crossover radio hit. A hit like the one she needs. A hit which she IS capable of having.
We had the opportunity to listen to several of the songs from Carey’s new album and we were very disappointed. The songs aren’t bad at all, but they are not smashes. There are far too many “album tracks” – and EVERY song should be of the caliber that it can be released as a single.
The new songs on Memoir put you in a mood. But, we don’t wanna be put in a “mood” – we wanna go on a motherfuckin’ journey!
We gave Mariah’s camp many notes, all good, and sadly we don’t think they took any of them.
If Carey had released THIS SONG or one like it as her first single, and not Obsessed, it would have been a HUGE hit for her.
Memoirs will debut big and drop quickly. It won’t have legs or sell as well as it could have.
Oh, well. There’s always the next album!
