Inneresting!
In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the release of Moulin Rouge, Baz Luhrman sat down for an in-depth interview about the film and revealed some shocking details about which stars auditioned for the lead roles - and which were really close to landing them!
Although we can't imagine Christian and Satine being played by anyone else other than Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, at least for the male lead, Ewan had some hefty competition. Baz reveals that Brokeback Mountain co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger both were front-runners for the part at one point. Baz explains:
"Dear Heath Ledger, [he had] incredible scenes with Nicole. Because at one stage, Christian [the role that went to McGregor] was very young, he was a younger guy, and then I was aware of Ewan but I didn't know if he could sing… [And] Jake should do a musical. He's a wonderful actor, but [he has a] great voice, tremendous voice. He sang some [Stephen] Sondheim for me, complicated singing, great voice. When is he going to guest on 'Glee?' "
We don't know! When, Ryan Murphy, WHEN?! LOLZ!
As for the role of Satine, there was no question for Baz that Nicole was the right choice, but for a time, Baz considered giving a part to Courtney Love, a woman he calls "wild and unpredictable and a great performer." No, she wouldn't have gotten the lead, but he did want to find a place for her, espcially after she so graciously offered him the rights to Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. In the end though, she was kept behind-the-scenes.
Yeah, that was probably for the best. We don't know how spectacular, spectacular she would've been under the pressure of filming a major motion picture. But Heath…now that would've been interesting. It's hard to picture, but if there's an audition tape flying around, we'd love to see it!
