Cruel Turkey Drop Stopped!

Turkee

As we previously mentioned, Yellville Arkansas hosts an annual Turkey Trot Festival, where a small private aircraft would throw wild turkeys out of the sky.

This cruel practice was brought to PETA's attention and the animals rights group offered a $5,000 reward for any tips that led to the arrest and conviction of the "phantom pilot."

Many people at the festival still supported the turkey drop, wearing t-shirts that read: "I am the phantom pilot."

There was even a sign offering a $10,000 reward for the arrest of the PETA employee that came up with the $5,000 reward.

This year's Turkey Trot Festival passed without a single turkey dropped.

It may have been because of a warning to whoever the pilot may be, the FAA said:

"If a plane flies over and a turkey comes out of it, we're going to be talking to somebody."

With pilots risking losing their licenses it seems this cruel practice may have finally come to an end.

In-N-Out Burger Expanding East!!!!

In and out burger

Great news, America!

In-N-Out Burger is EXPANDING! Yes! That mean's you, yes YOU, might get to taste what all your friends on the West Coast have been bragging about for years!

The restaurant chain has shared that they are investing $21 million into a new meatpacking facility in Fort Worth, Texas that would "support expansion across Texas and possibly into neighboring states."

Sources suggest that up to thirteen states outside of Texas — including Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas — could be getting a friendly, neighborhood In-N-Out Burger!

Yes, we realize this is a website devoted to health and fitness, but everyone can splurge every once in a while. Why not cheat with the best fast food California has to offer?

Cross your fingers you'll be one of the lucky southwesterners to be chomping down on a juicy "Double-Double" in the near future (in moderation of course)!

Peter Jackson Continues To Fund The West Memphis Three!

Peter Jackson Funds West Memphis Three

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson continues to fund the West Memphis Three investigation even after their release from prison.

While the men are free, they are still technically considered guilty in the books. Like we told you when their freedom happened, they are still allowed to maintain their innocence, but in order to leave prison, they were required to say the state's prosecution had enough evidence to convict them.

Of course, many have believed in their innocence since the 1993 murder case occurred. Furthermore, by allowing the men to go free, it is widely felt the justice system in Arkansas finally came around to their innocence also. Unfortunately, in order to free the men so suddenly, they had to walk lightly around the technicalities of the law.

So what's left to do? Clear

Burt Reynolds Sued Over Failing To Pay $1mil In Mortgage

Burt Reynolds

Burt Reynolds has failed to make mortgage payments on his Florida "paradise" estate for almost a year.

Burt has been experiencing health problems for the past couple of years and is now believed to be living in Little Rock, Arkansas (where the lawsuit was mailed).

With the health problems, we highly doubt he's gonna worry about this. Yes, it was his paradise, but it seems he's found more important things to think about these days.

19% Of Restaurant Menu Items Display Incorrect Calorie Count

calorie counts

We were happy to hear in June that big chain restaurants across the country are being required by the FDA to to post a calorie count for every menu item they sell.

Now, however, we're disappointed to hear that nearly 19% of items on restaurant menus have 100 or more additional calories than the amount posted!

Needless to say, that's gotta get fixed!

On a more positive note, when researchers ordered 269 different food items from 42 different sit-down and fast-food national chain restaurants across Massachusetts, Arkansas and Indiana, most were within 10 or so calories of the information listed.

Unfortunately, the most inaccurate listings happened to be paired along with food displaying the lowest calorie counts.

The study's senior author Susan B. Roberts, PhD, said in a statement:

"We were pleased to see that average calorie listings are accurate, but we think it is very important that lower calorie foods not contain more calories than listed because such foods are purchased by people trying to control their weight. They will find that harder to do if they are eating more than they think."

We totally agree!

This is exactly why nutritionists and trainers will recommend calorie counters to OVER-ESTIMATE just how many they are ingesting in order for their weight loss efforts to be most effective.

It sounds like it's a good idea to tack on an extra hundred calories on any restaurant meal you're eating in order to successfully stay within your daily calorie allowance.

It's better to be safe than sorry, right?

Ellen The Artist Elephant Has Passed

RIP Ellen

R.I.P!

Ellen the elephant, who painted and played the harmonica, was an Arkansas celebrity for nearly 57 YEARS, so much so that mourners braved 100-degree heat on Sunday to attend a memorial service for her.

Ellen died on July 5th from a stroke or heart attack at the age of 60.

For decades, children and adults visited the Asian elephant, celebrated her birthdays and watched her paint abstracts that were sold at zoo auctions to raise money for new projects.

Not only could Ellen paint and play the harmonica, she also played the piano and enjoyed walking through the zoo each morning before it opened.

Her keepers said the elephant would purposefully walk over to see Sue, the white rhinoceros, and Sue would greet her.

AW!! She will be missed by a multitude of mammals!
