This has to stop!
Every year in the town of Taiji, Japan, thousands of dolphins are killed in a small cove.
In 2009, a documentary about the slaughter, The Cove, was released, directing much of the world to pay attention to the slaughter.
In the past, there have been few protestors, since Japan has a history of imprisoning anyone who protests against the hunting. This year, along with Sea Shepherd, numerous animal rights groups have gone to the cove to protest the fisherman and the slaughter.
Even with added pressure and more activists protesting on site, the fishermen of Taiji have not faltered.
Unfortunately there is nothing to be done since dolphin hunting is not illegal. All people can argue is the manner in which the dolphin are killed. It is supposed to be in a humane, quick way, but most of the time it is not.
Something has to be done about this! Dolphins are wonderful creatures. There’s no reason for them to be slaughtered each year. The Japanese say they use the meat to eat, but the mercury levels in dolphins is dangerously high – at a toxic level.
It’s sad that the slaughter still goes on today. Instead of doing it out of necessity, it seems it is so deeply rooted in tradition and won’t end anytime soon.
