Okay. Here are two things we are totally certain about:
1) Claire Danes was the perfect choice for the part of Angela Chase on My So-Called Life!
2) She is TOTES gorgeous in everything that she has ever done!
But back when the teenage angst drama was casting for their lead role, producers had their heart set on someone else for the part!
According to a new profile on Danes in The New Yorker, she almost lost out on her breakout role to a then 16-year-old Silverstone!
Alicia actually auditioned for the part and immediately caught executive producer Ed Zwick‘s eye. He wanted to give her the gig. But his co-executive producer Marshall Herskovitz reportedly put an end to the idea, saying:
“Alicia is so beautiful that that would have affected her experience of the world. People would have been telling her she was beautiful since she was six years old. You can’t put that face in what’s been written for this girl.”
OK, yeah. Alicia is a total Betty! But is Mr. Herskovitz implying that Claire isn’t also stunningly beautiful?!?
Series creator Winnie Holzman discussed what they saw in Claire that they didn’t see in Alicia, explaining:
“[Danes] was sexy and not sexy, free and bound up, open and closed, funny and frighteningly serious.”
AKA – an AH-Mazing actress!!!
My So-Called only lasted one season on ABC but the series left its mark on a generation of young girls and guys alike. It also earned Claire her first Golden Globe award and her first Emmy nomination, with many accolades to come in later years!
As for Alicia, she ended up playing a very different kid of high-schooler in Clueless!
No matter what anyone says, we think you are both B-E-A-utiful in each and every way!!!
