Ellen Pompeo filmed lots of steamy love scenes for Grey’s Anatomy. Most were no big deal. But one… one was such a terrible experience, she has never even been able to watch it again!
Which one? McSteamy? McDreamy? We know she and Patrick Dempsey didn’t always get along… NOPE! It was with George!
Meredith Grey hooks up with her best friend George O’Malley in Season 2. However, the one-night stand isn’t full of passion. It gets painfully awkward as she breaks down crying in the middle of sex, eventually prompting George to storm out of the room. Well, it turns out Ellen may not have been acting entirely in the scene. Those tears were real!
During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday, the 55-year-old actress revealed she and T.R. Knight, who portrays George, both “cried” for real shooting the scene. Why? Neither of them wanted to do it! OMG! She told host Alex Cooper:
“T.R. and I are such good friends, and we had to do a love scene, and we were both crying. We cried. We cried. And the scene was so uncomfortable and awkward. He didn’t want to do that, I didn’t want to do it. When we filmed it, it was so bad.”
No one on set thought making two of the show’s stars so uncomfortable they were sobbing on camera was maybe a mistake? This is why intimacy coordinators are so important…
Much to Ellen and T.R.’s dismay, or “worst nightmare” as she called it, “the network said there was too much thrusting” for standards and practices — so they ended up having to re-shoot the whole scene again! The Good American Family star continued:
“In your worst nightmare to have to do it one time, we had to reshoot that s**t. We had to reshoot it, and do it twice.”
The whole experience was so terrible for Ellen that she hasn’t seen the scene to this day! Whoa! The Catch Me If You Can star said:
“By the way, I’ve never watched that scene. I’ve never seen it. I don’t know how it was shot or covered or … how it was edited. But I’m full-on in tears the whole entire scene and those are real tears. There was a lot of stuff that I didn’t want to do at the time.”
For years, fans couldn’t believe the George and Meredith one-night stand storyline was a thing. Some have even head-canoned that it never happened! Apparently, so did Ellen and T.R. Awful. Watch the podcast episode (below):
