If you’ve kept your eyes on Ke$ha over the past few years, you know she’s a complete original! That’s why we were shocked to see such a blatant rip-off on her new live show!
The Crazy Kids singer is using backup dancers wearing tuxes and giant eyeball masks on her new tour. But the odd aesthetic is shockingly not a new idea!
Experimental band The Residents have been doing that same exact act for 30 years. It’s kind of their thing. Legally! Residents documentarian Don Hardy says:
“[Ke$ha is] interfering with their intellectual property. Her people definitely didn’t call in to say, ‘Hey, can we use this?’ They’re debating what to do. One potential way to deal with it is to ask for a cease-and-desist and have attorneys sort it out. I think they’d rather see a different outcome, though…
It could be a five-minute conversation if Ke$ha will acknowledge that the look came from the Residents and that she’s giving them a tip of the hat. Telling people, ‘If you’ve been to my show, it’s an homage’ might encourage some of her fans to check out the Residents, and the bigger win would be that bit of recognition.”
We hope they can have that conversation and see eye to eye on this.
Ch-ch-check out the video (below) to see an early recording of The Residents’ live show and see for yourself if Ke$ha owes an apology- or more!
