Sounds like the executive producer wasn’t the only one who had a difficult time with their leading lady!
Salvador Perez Jr., the man behind Lindsay Lohan‘s Liz & Dick wardrobe, says dressing the troubled starlet like Elizabeth Taylor was no easy feat.
The costume designer revealed:
“I was really put to the test to make the movie believable and iconic at the same time. And also, we├óΓé¼Γäóre talking Elizabeth Taylor and Lindsay Lohan, two woman who wear clothes very differently. I had to be inspired by Elizabeth Taylor, but flatter Lindsay Lohan…Lindsay was constantly watching Elizabeth Taylor movies. At the beginning of the day we├óΓé¼Γäód have a fitted costume, but she├óΓé¼Γäód completely change it at the last minute just because she was inspired by something else. Anytime something was going wrong, I├óΓé¼Γäód just pull out more jewelry and say, ├óΓé¼╦£Look, something sparkly, something sparkly! That usually placated her.”
We all know LiLo has an affinity for jewelry, especially when they aren’t hers! Ha!
But, distracting Lindsay with diamonds wasn’t Perez’s only obstacle.
Once he signed on for the movie he started watching all of Taylor’s films, only to receive a letter from 20th Century Fox stating if any of the Liz & Dick costumes looked “even remotely close” to the originals, they would sue since they have visual rights.
Yikes!
So how did he do it? Perez explains:
“The dress and cape [Lindsay] wears in the Cleopatra scenes is inspired by the original piece, but it├óΓé¼Γäós our own version of it. I found [the dress Lindsay wears] at a costume rental house. She has a little 23-inch waist, so she really fit into the period clothes.”
Despite all the hurdles Perez had to overcome, we think he did an fabulous job! Too bad the movie was panned…
