Uhh, it sounds like Shakira’s move may have been even more complicated than we realized!
As we reported earlier on Monday, the pop star bid her home in Barcelona, Spain farewell over the weekend. After her breakup with Gerard Piqué, she and her sons Milan, 10, and Sasha, 8, will be building a new life for themselves in Miami, Florida, where the singer has some maternal family members. The kids are expected to start school in America on April 11, per the Mirror. As evident in the 46-year-old performer’s lengthy Instagram post about the decision to ditch Spain, it was a super emotional goodbye for her! But now we might know a bit more about why she left when she did!

Of course, we all know one big reason the Hips Don’t Lie singer had to leave the city. After she and the former Manchester United player broke up 10 months ago (when it was revealed he was having an affair with his new girlfriend Clara Chia Marti), the Waka Waka vocalist was stuck living next door to the soccer star’s momma, Montserrat Bernabeu. Similarly, we wouldn’t blame Shakira for wanting to move across the world just to get as far from her ex as possible. The way things ended was messy AF! But here’s the thing: this move may not have been Shakira’s idea! Apparently, Gerard’s mom wasn’t the only one who drove Shakira away! His father reportedly forced the move on her, too!!

According to Spanish outlet El Periodico, the Zootopia alum received an email from the athlete’s dad, Joan Piqué Rovira, on March 13 asking her to vacate the couple’s former home by April 30 — or she’d have to pay compensation! The exact amount wasn’t made public, but it was probably way more than Shakira was willing to hand over to her cheating ex’s father because she got the hell outta there!

Per the outlet, the news was handed to Shakira while she was in New York City to perform on The Tonight Show last month. While out shopping in the city with her kids, she was reportedly seen crying because the “eviction” email had just hit her inbox. Oof!
On the other hand, though, we’ve heard rumors of Shakira’s plans to move to the Sunshine State dating back to November, when the co-parents finalized their custody agreement. It was only the failing health of her parents that kept her from going right away. If the eviction rumors are correct, maybe the March notice was such a shocker to the mother of two because it finally gave her a non-negotiable move-out date?
As for why Gerard’s father is meddling in this situation, this is complicated, too! Apparently, the former couple owned the house together before Joan became the sole shareholder last September (after the breakup). It’s unclear why exactly the ownership changed. Perhaps it was part of their split arrangement?? Shakira gets the kids most of the time, the Piqués get the house? Wouldn’t be too surprising…
No matter the circumstances of the move, it was definitely a bittersweet day for the Colombian. Photographers captured the 46-year-old tearfully hugging her family and friends goodbye on Sunday before boardings a private jet with her sons. Take a look:
